A new co-working space with on-site childcare is now open in downtown OKC

An OKC metro mom has branched out and started a business to help other parents get the best of both worlds: time with the kids and working.

Paige Mitchell said she’s always had a knack for working with children.

“I’ve been in daycare since I was about 15,” Mitchell said.

When she had two, Mitchell was looking for work-life balance.

“I was doing freelance graphic design and trying to make websites, and at the same time I was babysitting and (sic) with my kids,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell realized how difficult it was to balance being a mother and working at the same time, so she had an idea.

“I was talking with my mom one night, and we thought about how something like this would solve my issues and my parents trying to work from home,” Mitchell said.

“Recess” was born.

“We’re a coworking space with on-site childcare, and we offer private workspaces and flexible childcare options,” Mitchell said.

“Recess” is located in downtown Oklahoma City and is one of the companies on the Oklahoma City Innovation District Entrepreneurship Asset Map.

The district said the city is becoming a hotspot for start-ups due to the low cost of living, location and lower taxes.

“The Oklahoma City Innovation District, along with other key entrepreneurship-focused organizations across the city, are working together to promote OKC as a leading emerging entrepreneurship ecosystem where startups can thrive. “said OKC Innovation District President and CEO Katy Evans Boren. said.

According to the district’s website, the Asset Map is a network of approximately 60 services and/or resources provided by approximately 40 organizations in two similar industries.

The map will only grow as data is captured by professionals working in these industries daily.

“At the end of the day, when a new mom comes in and says, ‘I’ve done so much work today,’” Mitchell said. “I’m so happy. It means our mission is accomplished.”

Recess is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
