Downtown Owensboro Summer Jam

When you’ve been in Owensboro for many years, you realize that the city likes to incorporate the riverfront into almost every major event.

I’ve often had discussions with friends and family about how we can even take the mighty Ohio River for granted. Think of all the people in this country who do NOT live on a body of water and what they miss.

And what happens in August will not just be a blast, but it will hark back to a time in the 1970s when a certain Sunday each year was dedicated to seaplanes. Yes, I’m talking about the next Owensboro Hydrofair.

The familiar, nostalgic sounds of seaplanes on the river will fill the air August 19-22 with trials on the 19th; qualifying races on 20 and 21; the APBA Grand Prix Summer National Championship on the 20th; and the APBA North American Championship races on the 22nd.

On August 20, the races will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. But expect an inaugural concert in Owensboro.

This Saturday night there will be a special edition of the city’s beloved Live on the Banks series at the Overlook, otherwise known as the Bat Wing. It’s called the Downtown Summer Jam, a free concert that will feature Zocephus & Funk Nasty and Soul N the Pocket. The Downtown Summer Jam will begin at 7 p.m.

But don’t run away after the show because you’ll want to stick around for an incredible pyro-musical performance of synchronized lighting on the Blue Bridge AND fireworks. Lights on Ohio will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Friday after 5. Owensboro Hydrofair. Live on the shores. And now, the Downtown Summer Jam. A summer that was once great is even better.

There’s rarely a conversation I have about the Executive Inn that doesn’t lead to someone (myself included) wishing it were still there. So many big names and FUTURE big names have performed on this Showroom Lounge stage.
