Downtown St. Charles to Shine in New Netflix Movie – Shaw Local

Downtown St. Charles should definitely be well represented in Netflix’s dark thriller “The Killer.”

Award-winning director David Fincher, known for such films as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Gone Girl” and “Fight Club,” was in downtown St. Charles recently to film the movie. The film stars Michael Fassbender, best known for playing the character Magneto in the X-Men franchise, and Academy Award-winning actress Tilda Swinton. The two were in downtown St. Charles for filming.

“This will definitely put the Baker Hotel on a new level,” said St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek. “But I know, based on the first cut, I believe our municipal building is there, obviously a lot of Main Street, the Arcada Theater and Riverside Pizza. There are many companies that have been affected by the film. When this movie comes out, it’s a good thing for our city.

Much of the filming took place at the historic Baker Hotel, which was built in 1928 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Vitek had the opportunity to meet Fassbender and Swinton. She said both of them, as well as the film’s executive producer, “were extremely grateful and appreciative of St. Charles.”

Vitek said the film’s executive producer was impressed with the city’s downtown after visiting St. Charles.

“He had made a comment that he had come here and he knew it was a place he would want to come and shoot a movie,” she said. “I think that’s pretty cool. Obviously, we have a very unique location with the river, and at night the lights shine on the Hotel Baker. It’s just a very unique and cool setting for a movie.

Vitek was unable to see any scenes filmed downtown.

“We knew there was filming by the river, and I could see the lights, but I didn’t see anything being filmed,” Vitek said.

Fassbender plays a hitman in the film, which is based on a French graphic novel. The filming of the film has just ended.

Paris, New Orleans and the Dominican Republic also serve as the film’s setting. which is expected to be released later this year or early next year.
