Opelika celebrates June 19 with downtown festivities

OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) – A free public event celebrated on June 19 in downtown Opelika on Sunday.

The community gathered for a freedom march around the downtown plaza, followed by a performance by former “America Idol” contestant Lady K.

The theme of the event was a celebration of culture. It included various clothing, food, game and business vendors.

A non-profit organization collaborated with the city for the festivities. Girls STEPS, Inc. CEO Tiffany Gipson said Sunday was a great opportunity to spread the story of Juneteenth.

“It’s very important that we celebrate Juneteenth,” Gipson said. “At Opelika, we have a whole ‘Together Opelika’ movement that is going on right now. So for us to move forward, we feel it’s very important to embrace our culture. So we were very happy to have so many organizations coming together to set this up for the community so that we can share Black history and the freedoms that we have.

The event even had special competitions to honor all dads on Father’s Day. One of the competitions being a fun dance enjoyed by many.

Willy Payne said his favorite title was being a father and he loved spending it at the Juneteenth event.

“Hey, that was a sad thing, but now we’re making it a good thing and it was a good party for everyone,” Payne said.

The evening ended with Lady K thanking everyone for their support throughout her journey on the show.

“It was only possible that I got this far thanks to you guys voting every week and supporting and sharing stuff and just spreading the word,” Lady K said. this time with you.”

The city plans to repeat the event every year.
